London Busses

The London Busses are a way to get around London. London's famous red busses are a quick, convenient and cheap way to travel around the city, with plenty of sightseeing opportunities along the way. The London bus network has seen many improvements in recent years with new busses, more frequent services and improved accessibility. A single bus fare costs £1.45 with a Visitor Oyster Card. The Visitor Oyster cards are plastic smartcards you can use instead of paper tickets. You can buy them at the stations and are unlimited valid. You can put money on the card which you use when you travel. It is the cheapest way to pay for single journeys on bus. This is also used by the Tube, tram, DLR, London Overground and most National Rail services in London. You can no longer pay for your London bus fare with cash. But you can buy a travelcard. You can travel as often as you like on bus, Tube, tram, DLR, London Overground and National Rail services within the London travel zones with a Travelcard. They are valid for either one or 7 days. If you walk into the bus you have to scan your card on the card reader. On the card reader are contacless symbols. If you do not live in the UK, you can still buy an Oyster card but only when you arrive in London.

You can easily add more money on your card you can do this at:

  • Touchscreen ticket machines in Tube, DLR, London Overground and some National Rail stations

  • Around 4,000 Oyster Ticket Stops across London

  • Travel Information Centres

  • Tube and London Overground station ticket offices

It is not possible to upgrade your Visitor Oyster Card online. Bus passes are valid for the whole bus and tram network in London. To ask the driver to let you off at the next bus stop, press one of the red buttons. London's buses run throughout the night. Night bus services cover the period between the close of theTube and the start of daytime bus services. Many London bus routes run for 24 hours but services are less frequent during the night. All 8,500 London buses are low floor vehicles. Bus travel is free for wheelchair users, there is room for one person using a wheelchair.

The London Tube is also a very famous way to get around. The London Tube is the London's Underground rail network. This is the quickest and easiest way of travelling around London. For the purposes of working out different fares, London's transport map is divided into six concentric zones. Zone 1 and 2 are in Central London and Zones 6 to 9 cover the outer edge of the capital. Oyster card prices are always cheaper than paper tickets for the Tube. There are discounts and there is free travel for children, students, elderly and disabled travellers. You can also pick up a free London underground map at any London Tube station, you can also get them at tourist information centres for free to help you get around.

The Docklands Light Railways (DLR) are driverless. They only serves parts of East and South-East London. The DLR connects with the Tube network at Bank and Tower Gateway stations and also at Shadwell, Stratford, Bow, Heron Quays, Canning Town and Canary Wharf. The DLR also serves the London City airport. Fares are the same as those on the Tube, and you can also use the Oyster and Travelcard  on the DLR.

River bus services on the Thames

Travelling by river is also a great way to get around in London. You'll beat the traffic and soak up some fantastic views along the way. The Thames is the biggest river of England. This way of traveling is mostly used by tourists. River buses are great value and serve six different routes with destinations between Putney and Woolwich Arsenal. Generally, you need to get a ticket from a pier ticket office before boarding a boat. However, some services require you to buy your ticket on board. If you own a travelcard or an Oyster card you can get discounts on many riverboat routes. All London piers are weelchair accessible and the newer river boats have weelchair spaces.

London tram

Trams run in parts of South London. London's tram network, Tramlink, was introduced to South London in 2000. The London tram network runs from Wimbledon through Croydon to Beckenham, where it has proven a popular mode of transport. The trams run every 10 minutes in the daytime on Mondays to Saturdays to Wimbledon,Elmers End and Beckenham Junction and about every seven minutes to New Addington. Trams are treated as a part of the bus network, so the Oyster Cards can be used on the Trams, and the travelcards can de used on the Trams as well. All children under 16, as well as 16-17 year olds living in London and in full-time education, travel free on buses and trams.

With the London trains you travel overground and you can go to places across the city and beyond the Tube network. Most local train lines connect efficiently with the Tube and accept payment by Visitor Oyster card. National Rail Enquiries is a website that provides detailed information about rail services in London, covering routes, timetables and fares. Network maps are also available on this site.

London’s official taxis are the black cabs, they can be booked by the phone but they are also situated on standard places, like the airport and at the bus and Tube stations. There is a minimum charge of £2.40, but your total costs depends on the distance that you travel. Extra charges apply when you take a black cab from Heathrow Airport, book by telephone and on Christmas Day and New Year's Eve. Many black cabs accept payment by credit card but check with the driver before the trip starts. Card payments attract Extra charges. All black cabs are also wheelchair accessible and carry assistance dogs at no charge. Private hire vehicles and minicabs must be booked at an office, by telephone or email. Reputable, licensed minicab companies can offer a cheaper alternative to the black cab. Their fares are not on a meter, instead you should ask how much the trip will cost when you make a booking. There are also a lot of illegal cab drivers who are standing on the street and offering to give you a ride.
